Mentoring Works Program
School-Based Mentoring
This project links caring adults in the community with students in need of a little extra attention and care during the school day. Students are chosen because they are in need of scholastic or social encouragement and direction. The mentor's job is to build a relationship with the student and help them succeed at school. They do this both by helping with school work and having fun. The In-school Mentoring Program recognizes that not everyone is ready for a traditional community-based mentoring relationship. They may not have time or they may just want the added safety and structure of a school setting. By placing a mentoring program in a school, mentors and children can become more comfortable with each other and take advantage of the added structure. Our In-school Mentoring program is designed to offer the maximum flexibility to meet mentors' schedules.
In-school Mentors commit to:
- Visit the student once a week for about an hour
- Commit to a minimum of half the school year
- Meet students during the school day on school grounds
- Undergo reference and criminal background check
