Upcoming Events

It is now time to register for Moving Further Upstream: Creating Champion Communities to Prevent Sexual Violence, an all-day, regional workshop tailored to assist communities mobilizing efforts to prevent sexual violence.
This is the second, of a two session, opportunity to participate in this effort. You are encouraged to join community partners who attended the first round of workshops to contribute to our collective efforts to stop sexual violence before it starts.
Effective primary prevention efforts that support systemic change are best supported by a broad base of individuals and organizations that share a common vision but bring varying perspectives and life skills to carry out that vision. The purpose of the Minnesota Champion Communities Project is to support the development of multidisciplinary community teams which will form in order to address the prevention of sexual violence. This is the second event of an on-going initiative to build primary prevention competencies in the state which will include targeted technical assistance to involved communities.
This all-day session will offer two tracks.
- Track Iwill offer the opportunity for individuals that could not make the first Moving Upstream session to become familiar with the "frame" community teams will be applying to future work.
- Track IIwith provide an opportunity for individuals that attended the first session to build on the "frame" for future work.
The entire group will come together in the afternoon to work and learn together on the next steps to build a multidisciplinary team. Throughout the day, participants will enhance their skills on recruiting, organizing and mobilizing.
While this initiative will focus on how we can collectively change the social climate currently supporting sexual violence, those interested in related issues of ending domestic violence and child abuse will find these workshops to be relevant to their primary prevention efforts.
Thanks to our local co-sponsors, this all-day training will be offered in FIVE different locations throughout Minnesota.

This workshop will offer both an animated conversation about preventing violence before it happens AND strategies to help engage leaders in your community to step up and become change agents with you. Throughout the day, participants will enhance their skills on recruiting, organizing and mobilizing. Topics include:
- Primary Prevention of SV
- Getting People to the Table
- Developing a Message
- Creating a Community Collaborative
- Strategizing for Change
- Making the Vision Happen
We know that long-term systematic change within a community occurs when groups of people, from various sectors or experience, come together as a team to demand such change. A follow up session in the spring will be offered for community teams to dig deeper into what it means to work collaboratively to prevent sexual violence.
While this initiative will focus on how we can collectively change the social climate currently supporting sexual violence, those interested in related issues of ending domestic violence and child abuse will find these workshops to be relevant to their primary prevention efforts.
Thanks to our local co-sponsors, this all-day training will be offered in SIX different locations throughout Minnesota.

8/26/2010- A message to MNMAN Members from Chuck Derry:
Today commemorates the 90th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution which gave women the right to vote. As you know, women have continued their struggle for full equality under the law and in our social environment for over 100 years. While great strides have been made, the social realties for women related to health, safety, and economic justice continue to undermine their individual and collective opportunities to thrive and often even to survive in our state. The Minnesota Women’s Foundation released their report "Status of Women and Girls in Minnesota" on June 17, 2010 which gives the most up to date review of women’s progress toward equality in the state. Please see the attached overview of the report.
In general, this report indicates that gender disparities continue in MN society which adversely affect the lives of women. Economic opportunities and positions of leadership continue to be restricted for women and girls in Minnesota. And this disparity contributes to the overwhelming numbers of girls and women who are sexually assaulted and battered in this state.
The “Status of Women and Girls in Minnesota” indicates that 1 in 3 women in Minnesota are sexually assaulted and/or physically abused in their lifetimes. It is time this violence is stopped. It will be stopped and prevented when the vision of women’s full equality is realized in our state. And that will happen when men start becoming allies with the women they know and love to create that society and those social environments where women and girls are valued as equal and respected partners with men at home, at work, in school, in government, in sports, in entertainment, in our faith communities, and in all aspects of our daily lives.
The MN Women’s Foundation report not only articulates the disparities found in our state but identifies what each of us can do to support and nurture gender equity in our homes and our communities. In particular, the MN Men's Action Network calls on men to wake up to the realities revealed in this report and step up to the challenge of joining women in this ongoing historical effort to realize the American dream of full equality for all people, and in particular, a mutual understanding of all women’s inherent rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Begin today to strengthen your resolve and acknowledge your responsibility to join the growing numbers of MN men (in partnership with women) committed to ending male violence against women, girls and boys. Begin today to create and sustain the social environment where all our people can flourish in an atmosphere of respect. In this way, we begin today, as men, to honor our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, aunties, and friends, whom we love and commit to joining them in creating that world envisioned over 100 hundred years ago by the early suffragettes who fought so diligently for women’s right to vote and who are among us today continuing that struggle.
For gender equality,
Chuck Derry
